Sergei played his junior hockey in the Soviet Union and made his debut in the Soviet elite league with Dynamo Riga in 1990-91.  He was a silver medallist with the Commonwealth of Independent States at the 1991 World Junior Championships and a gold medallist at the 1992 tournament.  He has also represented Latvia at the World Hockey Championships in 1994, 1997, and 2001.
Selected 55th overall in the 1992 Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins, Zholtok made his NHL debut against the Quebec Nordiques on April 8, 1993, registering an assist in his lone NHL game that year.  The following season, he played 24 games for the Bruins, scoring his first NHL goal on November 18, 1993, against Arturs Irbe of the San Jose Sharks.
The Bruins decided that Zholtok didn't fit in with their future plans, so he signed with the IHL's Las Vegas Thunder prior to the 1995-96 season and won the league's Ironman Award for outstanding play.  His play in the IHL led to him signing as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators in 1996 but inconsistency plagued his game even though he saw duty on the top scoring line.
When he was traded by the Senators to Montreal, he improved his faceoff skills and brought a new level of intensity to his game.  The re-invented Zholtok surprised everyone with an NHL career-best of 26 goals in the 1999-2000 season.  His inconsistency showed again after being dealt to Edmonton midway through the 2000-01 season, and he was a healthy scratch for the Oilers during their playoff drive.  Zholtok was traded by Edmonton to the Minnesota prior to the 2001-02 season and looks to re-start his career with the Wild.
