Tyler Wright was drafted 12th overall in 1991 by the Edmonton Oilers.  One year later, he made his NHL debut on October 10, 1992 with a goal against the Canucks' Kirk McLean.  He played six more games before returning to his junior team for the balance of the season.  After playing five games at the NHL level the following season, he played six more games during the shortened 1994-95 campaign.
On June 22, 1996, Wright was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 7th-round draft pick.
