Left-winger Mike Watt represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in the midst of his collegiate career at Michigan State.  Watt joined the Edmonton Oilers after his time with the Spartans was finished.
His first season as a professional was spent primarily with the Hamilton Bulldogs, the Oilers American Hockey League farm club, but he did play up in Edmonton for 14 games.  Watt managed a goal and two assists during his stint with the Oilers.  That summer the Oilers lost their starting netminder, Curtis Joseph, to free agency and were in need of a new puck-stopper.  The Oilers traded Watt to the New York Islanders in exchange for goaltender Eric Fichaud on June 18, 1998.
