Selected by the New York Islanders with the fifth pick of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Torres has been a distinguished scorer on both the minor league and international levels. The winger got his first crack at the NHL in 2001-02, making his debut with the New York Islanders against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Nov. 24. In 2000-01, he led the Ontario Hockey League's Brampton Battalion in scoring for the second consecutive year with 70 points in 55 games and was named to the OHL's All-Star Second Team. Torres also scored the game-winning goal for Canada in the bronze-medal game during the 2001 World Junior Championships. During the 1999-00 season, he finished seventh in the OHL in scoring, compiling 43 goals and 48 assists. Torres was voted the Most Dangerous Player in the Goal Area, player with the best shot and runner-up for best stickhandler in the OHL's Western Conference during the 2000 OHL Coaches Poll.

Scouting Report (from TSN):
Assets: Has a strong lower body, which enables him to keep possession of the puck in the corners, and a nice scoring touch. Is developing a solid all-around game.
Flaws: Needs more work on his skating. Won't be able to finesse his way to the big league so he needs to rely more on his power game.
Career potential: Third-line left-winger.
