In his first five NHL seasons, Carter twice changed teams as part of blockbuster trades.  After being drafted by the Quebec Nordiques with their 10th choice (220th overall) in the 1992 Entry Draft, Carter was dealt to the Washington Capitals in 1996 for a draft pick.  But that transaction proved minor in light of a stunning deal the following season that sent Carter to the Boston Bruins as a part of a six-player trade that brought Adam Oates, Bill Ranford and Rick Tocchet to the Caps.  In Boston, Carter emerged as one of the NHL's top power forwards, using his size to drive to the net and create high-percentage scoring chances.  In 2000, though, the Bruins dealt Carter to Edmonton for another elite power forward, Bill Guerin.
