Selected by Toronto Maple Leafs round 1 (#6 overall) in 1975 NHL Amateur Draft.
Selected by Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades round 1 (#3 overall) in 1975 WHA Amateur Draft. 
Don had a tough rookie season, scoring just six times, and only a slightly more encouraging sophomore session with 19.  Demoted each of his first three seasons with Toronto, he quit briefly in 1978 before agreeing to keep going a little longer, though he missed the majority of the 1978-79 season in retirement.
Traded to Colorado Rockies by Toronto along with Trevor Johansen for Paul Gardner, March 13, 1979.  Traded to Edmonton by Colorado for Bobby Schmautz, February 25, 1980.  Sent to the Wichita Wind of the Central Hockey League.  He and teammates Don Murdoch and Tom Roulston led the Wind to the Adams Cup final against Salt Lake before losing in seven games.
As he and his wife Terry drove home just a few days later, they were hit head-on by a pick up truck.  Ashby died in hospital a few hours later from massive internal injuires.
