Areshenkoff had scored 51 goals in his final year of junior with Medicine Hat, and as a result was drafted a respectable 32nd overall by Buffalo in 1977.
Midway through 1977-78 he suffered a serious shoulder injury, which sidelined him for the rest of that season and all of the next.  The Sabres left him exposed in the Expansion Draft in 1979, and the Oilers, hoping he would make a recovery, chose him.  However, he played just four times in Edmonton, spending the rest of the year in Houston of the Central league.  In the off-season, the Oilers traded him to Philadelphia with a 10th-round draft choice for Barry Dean.
He retired in 1984 never having made it back to the NHL.
