With several offensive tools at his disposal, Cleary became the 13th overall pick at the 1997 Entry Draft when the Chicago Blackhawks decided to give his scoring skills a look.  That came on the heels of Cleary's three-year junior career that saw him total 323 points in 220 WHL games from 1994-98, including a 115-point campaign in 1995-96.  Cleary earned OHL first-team all-star honors that year and the following season.  The Blackhawks called up Cleary briefly in 1997 and again for a more expanded role in 1998, when he played 35 NHL games.  The Blackhawks dealt Cleary to the Edmonton Oilers in 1999, and he enjoyed a breakout year there in 2000-01, when he tallied 35 points in 81 games.
