Because Brewer combines hard hitting,
strong skating and offensive flair, the New York Islanders used the fifth
overall pick in the 1997 Entry Draft to select him. In 1998, Brewer
jumped straight from the Prince George Cougars of the WHL to the Islanders,
appearing in 63 games during his rookie season. |
After being traded to the Edmonton
Oilers in 2000, Brewer's offensive talents blossomed. When he scored
25 points in 81 games for the Oilers in 2001-02, Brewer more than doubled
the offensive output from his rookie season when he managed just 11 points.
The backliner became a valuable power-play asset to the Oilers in his first
season there, scoring six goals. |

Scouting Report
(from TSN): |
Assets: Has
great size and doesn't hesitate to use it. Moves very well laterally and
carries a cannon for a shot from the point. Has greatly improved his decision-making. |
Flaws: Has
less offensive potential than once thought. Will occasionally take himself
out of position to make the big hit. |
Career potential:
Brewer
should remain a mainstay along the Oilers blueline for years to come. When
at his best, he could be a complete defenseman. He'll kill penalties, play
the power play and log huge minutes. |
